Mr. Enrique Ortiz Mejia was born in Mexico in 1973. Since his early childhood, he has been influenced by his rich heritage of Mexican Art going back thousands of years. As a child, he showed great interest and talent for painting as well as graphic arts. By the young age of 11 he was entering local art competitions.
His attraction to sculpture continued to develop in 1994 when he worked in his father-in-law's iron factory. Doing heavy labor in the factory, he learned to be a skilled craftsman of commercial constructions.
In 2001 Mr. Mejia received recognition and scholarship from the Bellas Artes and Conaculta Competition and attended the School Of Artistic Initiation in Bellas Artes. There he received an education in advanced drawing, engraving, oil painting and art history. As he continued to develop his talent, he naturally gravitated back towards his basic love for sculpture. He professionally started his career when he was 23 years old.
His studio is located in Mexico City, near the homes of artists he admires: Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Enrique works with various types of metals and iron, and a large assortment of light and heavy tools. There he spends much of his time in his studio creating his sculptures. Famous artists like Tamayo, Alexander Calder and Pablo Picasso have also influenced his art.
He is a member of the Jardin Del Arte club, The Tonaculta, and the Fondo Nacional De Cultura y las Artes. Enrique has also designed trophies for Televisa and the Movie & Video Fair of 2001 in Mexico City and has participated in over 30 expositions. His sculptures have been purchased in Mexico City, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, and galleries in California and New York.
